Email is an action surface#
For an autonomous agent, email is more useful as a tool than as a traditional inbox UI. The agent needs explicit operations it can call when a workflow requires communication.
The core tool set#
A practical email tool set includes listing mailboxes, listing and searching messages, reading a message, sending, replying, changing read state, and reversible deletion.
Why search matters#
Agents often need one message from a long-running mailbox. Searching subject, sender, recipient and body lets the agent narrow the context before reading full messages.
Replies preserve the workflow#
A reply operation is different from a generic send operation because the agent is responding to an existing conversation. The mailbox identity stays consistent while the application handles the workflow.
Keep REST available#
MCP is useful for agent runtimes, but a REST API keeps the same mailbox usable from scripts, backends and applications that do not speak MCP.
